It is described as the unpacking of new products, where the product's owner captures the process on video and later uploads it to the web.

The video begins with reality TV designer, Lori Dennis (HGTVs Real Designing Women) showing the box to the camera and describing it's appearance. Dennis then opens the box and reveals contents of an informational booklet with company contact information and four, individually wrapped glasses. A warning is given about properly disposed of the plastic wrapping materials. Then demonstrated in the video is Dennis smashing the glasses together to test that they are in fact unbreakable. Information about the how to clean the glasses in the top shelf of the dishwasher is then disseminated. She wraps the video by setting the glasses on the counter.

"I've watched so many unboxing videos on YouTube. I'm not sure why it's so exciting to see what someone else gets, but it is," exclaims Dennis. "When the boxes arrived at our Los Angeles Warehouse, I called up production and told them to charge the camera batteries, we were doing an unboxing video! Everyone thought I was kidding, but I think it's super helpful to see what you'll actually get when you buy something."

The unboxing trend started to become popular in 2006 and since then it is common practice for any brand to film and release an unboxing video on YouTube.
