(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, November 25, 2013 ) Hawthorne, California -- New parents are constantly bombarded with the best ways to bring up their little ones. Conscientious parents are already aware of the fact they are bringing another person into the world thereby putting further strain on environmental resources. One way to help the planet and future generations is to use reusable diapers instead of disposables.
Over 49 million diapers are disposed of every day in USA and around 8 million in UK. This figure will grow with the ever increasing population explosion. With the average child using around 3500 diapers in the first year and around 7000 by the time they are toilet trained it does not take much imagination to realise the impact on landfill sites.
It will take around 200 to 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose and even then the particles of the diaper get into the surrounding environment causing disruption of normal organic compounds.
Disposable diapers are made of super-absorbent chemicals, paper pulp, plastics and adhesives which use crude oil as the raw material in their processing (approximately 1 cup of crude oil to make 1 diaper). Reusable diapers are mostly made from natural fabrics and although there is an environmental cost to the processing of these fabrics from raw material they use around 3 times less energy to produce compared to disposable diaper production.
The argument that any environmental saving in producing reusable diapers is offset by the fact they use energy for washing and drying is as ludicrous as saying we should all use disposable cutlery and crockery. As long as factors such as using an energy efficient washing machine, only washing soiled nappies at 60 degrees Celsius (wet ones can be washed at lower temperatures along with the rest of the laundry ) and air drying rather than relying on a tumble dryer are employed any potential negative environmental impact will be negated.
Bambungles reusable cloth diapers use bamboo fabric as bamboo grass is a sustainable raw material. Bamboo grows rapidly and is ready for harvest in 3 to 5 years. It is naturally resistant to disease and pests reducing chemical contamination of land with pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers.
Bamboo can be grown on marginal land and does not require intensive irrigation. Like all plants, bamboo uses photosynthesis to remove carbon dioxide greenhouse gasses from the air and produce oxygen but produces approximately 35% more than an equivalent amount of trees. Most bamboo is grown in China but don't worry about the pandas – the bamboo used in cloth production is different to the bamboo they eat!
Overall, all diapers have an environmental impact; reusable ones try to reduce this impact by producing less waste requiring degradation in landfill, using sustainable natural raw materials and encouraging awareness of how we spend the planet's resources.
