(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, April 02, 2014 ) Los Angeles, CA -- A charity in Rwanda has just launched a fundraising for a surgery on the GoGetFunding website that they hope will help a young woman named Olive Ingabire live a more normal life.
According to the article that accompanies the fundraiser, Olive is a 25-year-old woman who first consulted with medical professionals seven years ago in regards to symptoms including severe headaches, an impaired right leg, and hypogastric pain.
As Olive told the doctors, she first started experiencing headaches, which progressed to a backache and then a worsening weakness in her right leg. The medical professionals examined Olive and found that although she had a history of irregular menstruation, she did not suffer from any physical trauma like an accident or other injury that would explain her troubling symptoms. In addition, she did not have a disorder of the sphincter, cough or any chronic illness either in herself or in her family.
Olive became so ill, she was forced to quit school. Eventually, she was seen by a neurologist and neurosurgeon at Butare University Teaching Hospital in Rwanda, where a CT-Scan of lumbar-sacral spine was completed. The test revealed a prolapsed disc of L4-L5 and L5-L1.
“Noted on physical examination patient held by two relatives, lumbar-sacral tenderness, no mass, no amyotrophy,” the article on the GoGetFunding website said.
“Noted on limbs: abolished sensation on the right lower limb with muscle power of 7 / 5, abolished reflexes. The left lower limb muscle power 5/5 and normal reflexes.”
Although Olive underwent surgery in August, 2008 at Butare, she is still not completely healed. Her headaches, back pain and hypogastragia have decreased somewhat, but she has not been able to leave her bed due to the remaining impairment in her legs. As the article noted, the impairment has become much worse.
The creators of the fundraiser on GoGetFunding.com are hoping to raise enough money to help Olive to get the neurosurgery in Europe that she needs to use her legs again and return to living a normal life. Those who make a contribution will know they are assisting a young woman who just wants to return to school and live her life like everybody else.
