(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, May 08, 2014 ) Los Angeles, CA -- Out of 195 countries in the world, only 2% of which have made the use of Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) illegal. A few more countries considered Kratom as a controlled substance.
So what’s the fuss about Kratom and why is it considered as legal to use in some countries, illegal to some, and a controlled drug for others?
Kratom has been used by millions of people all over the world as a fixture in many long-established cultures in the South East Asian region. While it is deemed safe and as a useful tool in treating the opiate removal habits, still, the controversy about its uses has stirred controversy and getting Kratom has been a popular topic for some lawmakers pushing to consider the substance as illegal.
People who often travel and are using (or want to get Kratom products) should know the legal status of this controversial drug to avoid any hassle of violating any country’s local laws.
Thailand. Ironic it may seem that Kratom plant originated from Thailand but is considered illegal to grow, possess, sell, and purchase in the land. It belongs to the county’s list of Level 5 Narcotics and according to its government, the primary reason for banning the said drug was because Kratom was deflecting funds from the profitable opium trade in Thailand.
United States of America. Generally, Kratom is not an illegal drug in the USA and it can be sold, possessed, grown, and used. It is unregulated and can be purchased even without prescription. However, it is always safe to check with local authorities in each state the level of regulation they put in Kratom substance because there are some states which are in the process of considering legal regulations to control the sale of this drug.
Australia. In October 2003, the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee in Australia decided on making Kratom drug a controlled substance due to its potential to be abused. No record of Kratom abuse has ever been reported in Australia though. The government just wanted to have an early prevention of Kratom addiction problems that can arise if they would legalize its use and possession.
Germany. The use and possession of Kratom in Germany is still uncertain. Currently, it is considered as an unlicensed drug and local and international purchases are regulated under Section 73 of the Medicines Act of Germany. Personal purchases are prohibited online and any importation of it is carefully inspected by the border and is denied entry to the country.
Other countries like Denmark, Romania, Finland, and New Zealand consider the drug as a controlled substance, while the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Russia have unclear policies on such. Countries like Mexico and Canada made have legalized to buy and import Kratom, but it cannot be sold for personal human consumption.
