(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, May 21, 2014 ) Pasadena, CA -- The beauty industry has recently exploded with the new Virgin Argan Oil trend, and everything from pharmacy beauty brands to high-profile celebrity brands are now including this "liquid gold" in their hair care and skin care product lines.
With prices running the gamut from $6.25/oz for Pura D'or to a whopping $40.00/oz for Josie Maran, consumers find themselves wondering, what do you really need to spend to get quality Argan Oil and how do you know its the real thing?
To answer this question it pays to spend a little time investigating the origins of the Moroccan beauty oil.
Pure Moroccan Argan Oil is produced in Morocco through Women's cooperatives (which also, incidentally, benefits the women of the area with additional income and social power). The process of extracting the oil begins with the harvesting and cracking of the Argan Nut, a process which has failed to be mechanized successfully, which means it's still done by hand (a laborious job to say the least).
Bulk exportation of this product allows for it to be sold at a reasonable price in western markets, but cheap oil this is not, so it's no wonder many are skeptical of extremely cheap prices.
Does this mean that you should start shelling out the big bucks at sephora? Not necessarily. As with all products, the bigger the brand, the more is spent on advertising and that bill is passed all the way down to the consumer. Rebecca Lucas, from Kioba Natural Skincare, explains "It is possible for pure Argan Oil to be purchased for anything from $7 per ounce to $20 per ounce, but the key to getting a good deal with Argan Oil is to find a brand that spends enough to ensure purity, quality and sustainable sourcing without the gigantic advertising costs associated with large Mass-Market brands. Mid-range brands seem to have the best deal"
Rebecca Lucas also instructed on how to make sure you've found the real deal. She explained there are three qualities to look for: 1) Price, not too expensive, not too cheap, 2) it should come in a dark glass bottle to conserve its properties, 3) scent; pure argan oil should not have a strong or offensive smell, 4) color; cold-pressed argan oil should be light gold in color. Dark amber could mean the argan kernels have been roasted and the oil is intended for culinary use, and 5) ingredients; pure argan oil should obviously only have one ingredient listed on the label, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil.
