Correlation Between Fish Oil & Depression Found: More Fish Oil, More Happy

Not only does omega-3 give you a healthier heart, protects you from certain diseases and lowers your cholesterol levels, studies have recently found that omega-3, and food items that are rich in omega-3 such as fish oils, can reduce the effects of depression as well.

(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, May 27, 2014 ) Santa Monica, CA -- A new study involving fish oil and its effects on depression has yielded very positive results. The research study has discovered that an increased level of omega-3 in a person's diet, which is abundantly common in fish oil, can mitigate the long-term effects of depression, helping to avoid more severe psychological disorders, or even lower the incidence of suicide amongst people diagnosed with depression.

The study has shown that an increased intake of fish oil increases the serotonin levels within the body, which in turn, is related to the lowered incidence of depression. It is also found that incidence of depression, and consequently the incidence of suicide, is significantly lower amongst primarily fish-eating communities compared to others.

"We at PacificCoast NutriLabs are very happy to see the positive outcomes of this study." Says John W. Collins, president of PacificCoast NutriLabs, makers of high-quality food supplements like the PLATINUM Series Fish Oil Omega 3. "Depression is a very debilitating condition, and I'm happy to know that our products have the potential to save our customers from such a terrible thing."

Depression is a type of mood disorder associated with low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being. Depressed people can feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worried, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, hurt, or restless. They may lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions, and, in severe cases, may contemplate, attempt, or commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, loss of energy, or aches, pains, or digestive problems may also be present during depression.

According to the analysts, the reduced intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids is a key factor in most cases of depression. The researchers have deduced that since one of the benefits of high-dose fish oil is to increase serotonin levels, it is not unreasonable to think that the decrease in fish oil consumption in the past century led to a decrease in the natural levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is the body's natural anti-depressant and is popularly thought to be a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness. Researchers have also discovered that blood flow within a normal brain is uniform, whereas blood flow in a depressed patient's brain is scattered, where certain areas in the brain have little to no blood flow. Since high-dose fish oil can improve blood flow, it has been considered as another potential clue to explaining the roots of depression at a molecular level.

Researchers have cited that certain groups of people, who consume vast amounts of fish, have a lower incidence of depression amongst members of their communities. For example, the rates of depression in Japan, where the Japanese are known to eat larger amounts of fish than any other types of meat, are just a fraction of the rates in America, or other countries where low amounts of fish are eaten. In fact, New Zealanders have 50 times the rate of depression as the Japanese, and eat the least amount of fish in the industrialized world. In native Greenland, Eskimos, who consume some 7-10 grams per day of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids, have virtually no cases of depression in their communities, despite living in harsh conditions as opposed to other industrialized areas.
