(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, March 10, 2015 ) Los Angeles, California -- Resistance bands have increased in popularity today and though it has become more common in fitness centers, safety tips should be considered first when using them. Fitness enthusiast and Trained Sports CEO, Chris Moal, discusses some ways to make sure that resistance bands stay safe for exercising.

Make sure that the elastic bands do not have any scratches or cuts prior to using them. "If you observe nicks or cuts in the band, never attempt at using it. Check if the handles are fastened securely and in great condition so that they are not damaged," Moal explains.

Moal says, "When you are using any type of accessory like door jambs or poles to attach the bands to, check to see if they are also in great condition and if they are securely fixed into position." He added that the last thing anyone would like to happen is to have the band break from its fully stretched position and end up lashing anyone's face.

A warning also comes with using resistance bands in exercises. Moal warns against using more resistance that a person can handle. Instead, he suggests starting with smaller tension and then going up when technique and strength has improved. This will help a person maintain proper form while doing the exercises, which results to lesser chances of injuries.

In order to exercise safely, there are also other things to keep in mind when using resistance bands. Avoid placing resistance band handles over the feet since they might slip off and strike. Avoid stretching elastic bands to more than 2.5 times their length, says Moal. The bands are not recommended for use on uneven surfaces and should never be used for other activities apart from the exercises that they were designed for.

To clean resistance bands, use a damp wash cloth. Do not use cleaning products such as bleach and soap as they could affect the band's strength. This sports toll should be stored in a cool, dry place; avoid placing them under direct sunlight. The weakest part of a resistance band is where the band and the handles connect and should be checked each time the band is to be used.

Resistance bands are affordable sports tools that can help achieve fitness goals and just like other things, proper maintenance plays a great part in ensuring proper function and safety.
