Samantha was informed her baby will possibly give up thumb-sucking by the time their three years old, or even four years old, when the baby's learned alternative ways to relax themselves. However, the baby may continue to suck its thumb at night or at stressful moments for years beyond that.

Subsequently if a baby cries a lot and wants to suck something, a dummy can be a quick, effective soother. It'll give a parent a much-needed break too, but Samantha was told to bear in mind, that there's a link between frequent dummy use and ear infections. And the risk can be reduced by only giving the baby a dummy to help them settle it self to sleep.
