(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, May 30, 2015 ) Los Angeles, California -- Stuart Johns, a company director of Prohoze, has been following the World Wildlife Fund's constant efforts at educating the general public on the devastating effects the human race and global warming are having on the water supply on the planet.
WWF recently stated that, "Many of the water systems which keep ecosystems thriving and feed a growing human population have become stressed....Climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others.... By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population may face water shortages."
Prohoze (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZ7J7XE) believes that each individual can make a difference and help save water. One area where water is used unnecessarily is the garden. There are a number of things the keen gardener can do to save water. Rainwater costs nothing and is pure and excellent for plants. It is estimated that a 1,000 square foot roof will collect 625 litres of water in a rain barrel after just one inch of rain. Most rain barrels have an attachment for a garden hose or expandable hose for easy watering.
Lawns may look attractive but they require a lot of water to keep them green. It is a good idea to replace areas of grass which don't grow well, such as those under trees, on slopes or on rocky ground, with fast growing ground cover. Indigenous plants not only need less attention but they also encourage the wildlife to return to the garden.
Plants need to be watered slowly at the roots. Sprinklers waste water through both evaporation and allowing the water to go where it is not needed. Adding organic matter to soil can greatly reduce the necessity for frequent watering. Sandy soil allows water to run through too quickly and soil with lots of clay clings on to the water, possibly causing the roots of plants to rot. Organic matter not only helps the soil to maintain water, it also feeds the plants with essential nutrients.
Gardens need to be regularly tended. Weeds use water. Overcrowded and overgrown flower beds also use unnecessary water. A carefully maintained garden, with less lawn, more paths and indigenous plants will help to save water.
