A hose can be used to siphon water from a swimming pool, fish tank or pond. Siphoning relies on the law of gravity, so the receptacle which is being drained must be higher than the area where the water is being drained to. It is important that the end of the hose pipe, which is in the area to be siphoned, is kept underneath the water at all times, or the suction will be lost.

Gutters and down pipes constantly need emptying of debris, especially during the autumn months when the leaves are falling. Gutters don't need to be emptied handful by handful, it is much easier to place a hose into the gutter and let them fill with water and then the debris will naturally flow out with the water.

In the winter months snow can be a problem on paths which are used regularly around the house. As long as the temperature is above freezing, a hose attached to the hot tap can be used to remove snow from small areas. It is not advisable to do this on large areas as the water and melted snow has to drain off somewhere and it may form a mini lake in the road which will freeze into a skating rink as the temperature drops overnight.
Large, long-haired dogs are not easy to bath as their fur is designed to keep them dry. Many dogs love chasing and jumping to catch the water from a hose and this fun game can be incorporated into bath time, which many dogs do not enjoy. A garden hose, placed gently on to the fur, will penetrate down to the skin, allowing man's best friends to get a proper wash and rinse.
