Los Angles Press Releases

(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, June 29, 2015 ) Los Angeles, California -- The supermarkets are full of berries of one description or another during most months of the year. Prohoze company director, Stuart Johns points out, "Although berries are available all year round in supermarkets, these are generally commercially grown and are full of pesticides and herbicides, cancelling out their healthy qualities. By growing your own berries, you are in control of what goes into the soil and what is sprayed on the plants." Berries thrive in acidic soil. If the garden soil is not acidic, it needs organic matter such as pine needles and pine bark added to it and this needs to be watered in well with a garden hose . All berries, whether they are canes, bushes or bedding plants need to be regularly watered with an expandable hose in order for them to bear juicy, plump fruit.
Strawberries are the world's favorite berry and, if they are planted in the autumn to allow the root system to develop well, a bountiful crop can be harvested from spring to autumn the following year. Raspberry canes should also be planted in the autumn in order to achieve a crop the following year.
Instead of foraging for blackberries in the hedgerows and getting stuck on the thorns, it is now possible to grow thorn less, dwarf blackberry bushes in the garden. These bushes will produce the large, plump fruit that can be found in the supermarket but without the pesticides and herbicides. Blackberries that are being trained up a trellis should be planted around 6 feet apart, those that are being planted in a flower bed should be planted 3 feet apart. Again, it is important to plant them in the autumn and keep them well watered with the garden hose over the winter period.
Berries of all descriptions freeze exceptionally well and can last up to 12 months in the freezer. This means that should the newly planted bushes, bedding plants and canes produce a bumper crop, it will not be wasted. The fruit should be placed on an open baking tray and put in the freezer. Once the berries are frozen they can then be put into containers to prevent them from freezer burn.
