(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, July 11, 2015 ) Los Angeles, California -- There are few DIY tasks more satisfying than laying an instant lawn. What was once a piece of bare soil, perhaps full of weeds, stones and rocks, becomes a joy to behold.
Stuart Johns, a company director of Prohoze (www.prohoze.com), gives the following advice, "The key to a beautiful lawn is in the preparation and correct watering. You need to be meticulous when preparing the soil and ensure that the new grass is kept moist with a garden hose before, during and after planting." The ideal time for planting a lawn is in the autumn if the area is in a winter rainfall region. This gives the grass time to establish itself well before the spring. Lawns can be planted in the spring, but not in areas where there are water shortages and hose pipe bans.
All weeds, stones and rocks must be removed from the area which is to be grassed a few weeks before the lawn is to be laid. This area should then be raked with a large rake to ensure it is even and smooth. Air pockets may be hiding under the soil; the use of a garden roller will iron any of these out. If a garden roller isn't available, then stamping on the ground methodically should disperse these pockets.
Instant lawn is usually delivered in rolls and it is advisable to lay them on the day they are received. If this isn't possible, the rolls should be unrolled and watered well with an expandable hose to ensure they remain in premium condition while awaiting planting.
The laying of the turf should be planned so there is minimum traffic going over it. Each roll should be carefully laid in a pattern resembling brickwork. If it is a hot day, it is advisable to gently water each piece as it is laid. Air packets can be removed with the use of a roller. The newly laid grass needs to be well watered with a garden hose, soaking it down to the roots. After two weeks the newly laid lawn can be mowed for the first time.
