Los Angles Press Releases

(LosAngeles.CityRegions.Com, February 09, 2016 ) Glendale, CA -- Los Angeles-based Desert Sandals hopes to offer the world of fashion something more than mass production and plastic: handmade leather sandals crafted using tools and techniques over 2,000 years old, on Amazon. But is this too radical in an age of mass production and plastic? Perhaps consumers have become accustomed to lower prices afforded by automation and cheap material. On the other hand, immersion in the new causes nostalgia for the old. And that is exactly what Desert Sandals is betting on.
If the popularity of handmade retail giant Etsy is any indication of the popularity of handmade products, Desert Sandal's bet might very well pay off. In 2014, Etsy drove $1.93 billion in sales; and according to Bloomberg Business, Etsy is about to become New York's biggest tech IPO since 1999.
But with such a high demand for handmade clothing, will Desert Sandals be able to meet the demand without resorting to automation and mass production? A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "Nothing less than delivering the highest quality would be a worthy tribute to the artisan, who, through a balance of creativity and tradition, transforms scraps of leather into works of art".
And what about price? As has been mentioned earlier, tradition is very important to this new company, and that includes the fact that these desert sandals are traditionally worn by everyone, from royalty to wealthy businessmen to ordinary people of different ages and status. This means their price cannot be prohibitive to the general population.
How closely will Desert Sandals keep to these values and yet remain profitable, time can only tell. But as every long journey into the desert starts with a single step, Desert Sandals has at least taken its first.
