UK Company To Give Special Benefits For Women Suffering From Their Periods

Because of this monthly ordeal that women underwent, a certain company in the UK has developed the period policy, wherein women are given special benefits including free painkillers, hot water bottles, and a day-off.

Coexist, a company, based on Bristol employing 24 women is first of its kind to implement this law. According to the organization's director, Bex Baxter, the period policy would allow working women to take time for the natural cycle of their body. With this policy, female workers are allowed to take the time off, especially when suffering from dysmenorrhea or heavy menstrual bleeding. But instead of being categorized as sick leave, the company asks their women employees to make up for the time they've been on leave.

According to consultant gynecologist Gedis Grudzinskas, this step which was taken by the company is undeniably good for women's health. Grudzinskas has previously suggested that females who feel tired and uncomfortable during their menstrual period should be given the chance just to stay at home. He also discussed that some gynecological conditions are actually triggered by menstruation, such as endometriosis which makes women suffer from pain. Grudzinskas has also suggested that other companies should follow this policy.

According to the research conducted by the NHS Choices, 90% of women are actually experiencing discomfort and pain during their menstrual period, and 14% of women suffer from worst kind of pain comparable to having a heart attack. While the period policy is still relatively new to the ears of most countries, there has already been a menstrual leave policy in East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia) allowing women to take the day off for cramps.

With Coexist spearheading a new policy tackling women's privilege during their period, plenty of women around the globe are also hoping that their company will also follow the same rule.
